Merle Stichnote Obituary

Merle Harold Stichnote, age 81 years, 2 months and 28 days, of Steelville, Missouri passed away Thursday, November 29, 2019 at the Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri. He was born September 1, 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri to Harold and Cordelia Schrier Stichnote. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Smotherman in Red Bud, Illinois in April of 1960 and to this union two children were born.

Merle graduated from Fairview High School in Jennings, MO. He was employed at May Rose Packing Company in St. Louis for fourteen years and later was a mail carrier out of the U. S. Post Office in Cuba, retiring in the year 2000. Merle was also a fishing guide on the lower Meramec River. He was a past deacon at the Jennings Presbyterian Church. Merle was one of the founding members of the first Optimist Club in Steelville, which now is the Steelville Country Club.

He and his wife Carolyn enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and internationally.

He loved playing softball and did so for fifty years even playing in the Senior Show-Me games when he was in his 60’s. Merle was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. Most of all he loved watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Cordelia Stichnote.

Merle is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Carolyn Stichnote of Steelville, one son, Mike (Kim) Stichnote of Ashland, MO; one daughter, Lynn (Steve Barnes) Stichnote of Rolla, MO; five grandchildren, Zachary (Megan) Barnes, Andrew Barnes, Amanda (Jon) Melloway, Alexandra Stichnote and Sam Stichnote; three great-grandchildren, Chase, Cayden and Chloe; one brother, Allen (Julie) Stichnote of Jennings, MO; other relatives; and friends.

The Family chose cremation as the final disposition. Plans for a Celebration of Life will be at a later date.

The Family was served by the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, MO.
