Bradley Anderson
Payne
Nov 17, 1917 — Aug 21, 2011
Bradley Anderson Payne, 93, of Steelville, Missouri passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011 at Gibbs Care Center in Steelville. He was born November 4, 1917 in Foreman, Arkansas to Elisha Foster Payne and Maybelle White Payne. On October 25, 1940, he was united in marriage to Jewell Rogers who preceded him in death. He is survived by his six children, Sherman Earl Payne (late Sandra), Roy Anderson Payne and wife Mary and Larry Dale Payne and wife Vicki all of Steelville, MO, Betty Jean Campbell and husband James of St. Louis, MO, Judy Ann Mattingly and husband Richard of Ste. Genevieve, MO and Susan Arlene Lunsford and husband Michael of Park Hills, MO; twenty-one grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jewell; three children, Glenna Bell Wilson, Billy Ray Payne and Bobby Lee Payne; and three grandchildren, Shelia Rudis, Sherry Campbell and Anthony Payne. Bradley served honorably in the U.S. Army as a cook from June 29, 1945 until January 26, 1946. He was awarded the Victory Medal during WW II. Bradley was a musician playing his guitar for local church services as well as helping in the construction of a local church. He also served as a deacon and fostered many young children never turning any away. During this time he was employed by a local farm and later was contracted by a trucking company. He was also employed by Vitro Products and later worked at Finclair Plating in St. Louis until retiring and moving to Steelville. Upon the passing of Glenna Wilson, a daughter, he and Jewell raised her sons, Ricky and Ray. Bradley was well-known for being a trickster and trying to fool others. He frequently dragged his family on long eventful summer trips. Like the time they went to Lambert Airport in St. Louis and sat alongside of the highway for hours to watch the airplanes coming and going. On another summer occasion he grabbed Susie and returned to St. Louis to observe the construction of the Arch. One evening when no others were around, Bradley had a John Deer Tractor, with no brakes and needed help towing it home. He grabbed Betty asking her to tow him home with the truck. Every time he tipped his hat or flailed his arms Betty mashed the gas pedal at a faster pace. Unbeknownst to Betty, these motions meant for her to stop and slow down. Needless to say by the time they arrived at home, their dad, Bradley, would not even speak to Betty.
