Charles "Rick" Turnbough Obituary

Charles “Rick” Ricky Turnbough was born February 25, 1955 to Murphy and Hallie Barr Turnbough. Rick departed this life peacefully at home, with Jesus in his heart, on Monday, November 4, 2024, having enjoyed his immediate family the evening before.

As a child and teenager, Rick enjoyed shenanigans with his family and friends—stories about which he still loved to tell and which remain in the minds of those involved. He left school early to join the U.S. Navy from 1972-1974, where he served in a helicopter squadron on the USS Independence.

Rick was employed by Brewer Science in Rolla for over 20 years as an engineer.

He was an avid musician, writing his own music, often picking on one of his numerous guitars and playing harmonica.

Rick had a green thumb when it came to gardening and especially enjoyed making salsa and hot pepper jelly. He was an outdoorsman from a young age, enjoying deer hunting, camping, but mainly fishing for bass and crappie, which is verified by numerous trophies, fish frys’ and mounts on the wall. He was a founding member of the Upper Meramec Bass Club.

He enjoyed shooting pool and played for and coached teams to 2nd and 4th place at various state tournaments. He also played and coached softball. He rarely missed watching Cardinal baseball and loved talking about players and stats.

Rick was united in marriage to the love of his life, Shelly Brand in 1983. They raised three children, Brandon, Kelsey and Eric, all of whom he was very proud. In later life, he enjoyed his grandchildren, attending various sporting events they were involved in or watching videos of these activities.

Rick and Shelly enjoyed several mini vacations, especially loving Eureka Springs and Hot Springs, AR. As a huge fan of Gunsmoke and Marshall Matt Dillon, he had been looking forward to a trip to Dodge City, KS.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Murphy and Hallie Turnbough; and father-in-law, James “Jim” H. Brand.

He will be lovingly missed by his wife of 40 years, Shelly, of Bourbon, MO; children, Brandon (Amy) Turnbough, Kelsey (Nick) Pieber and Eric Turnbough; four grandchildren, Taylor Turnbough, William, Murphy and Vera Pieber; two brothers, Mike (Evelyn) Turnbough of Steelville, MO and Tim (Josie) Turnbough of Cuba, MO; one sister, Judy (Bob) Barlows of Overland Park, KS; mother-in-law, Wanda Brand of Steelville, MO; two brothers-in-law, Gary (Verna) Brand of St. James, MO and Larry Brand of Rolla, MO; one sister-in-law, LaDonna (Tony) English of St. James, MO.

The Family received friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Friday, November 8, 2024 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, MO.
