Helen Lorraine Shasserre, nee Conner, passed away Friday, November 19, 2021 at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 21 days. She was born to the union of James “Leo” Conner and Murill Souders Conner in St. Louis, Missouri on June 29, 1930. She attended grade school first through eighth in the St. Louis Normandy district. She and her parents and younger sister, Irene Conner, moved to their farm on Brush Creek nine miles north of Cuba, Missouri in July of 1945. Helen graduated from Cuba High School in 1949.
She went to work in the newly opened Brown Shoe Company factory in Steelville as an office clerk and later worked on the loss and gain desk. In June of 1951, she married Bob Shasserre in Steelville. Bob and Helen spent the first two years of their marriage living in Steelville. They lived in an upstairs apartment over the James and Margaret Cape house, where the Capes lived downstairs. The house is now known as the Evans House and for its art. In 1953, the Shasserres moved to Cuba and lived there for ten years. After the move to Cuba, Helen became a Cub Scout den mother. She was a member of the Trinity Chapel Women’s Club. She also helped in vacation bible school.
In 1963, the Shasserres moved back to Steelville where Bob started his own business, “Bob’s Auto Service.” Helen was the bookkeeper for thirty-three years along with other office chores before Bob’s retirement. She was also a Steelville school room mother for about six years.
Helen had many friends and enjoyed belonging to AIM High Extension Club. She also loved playing pinochle at the Senior Center in Cuba. Helen enjoyed her flowers and gardening and loved traveling with her husband, Bob, out West to the beach.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Murill Conner; her husband, Bob Shasserre; one son, Jerry Shasserre; one sister, Irene (Bill) Lewis; and sister-in-law, Georgetta Shasserre.
She is survived by her son, Tim (Linda) Shasserre of Steelville, MO; brother-in-law, Frank Shasserre of Cuba, MO; three grand-daughters, Jane Bullock, Debbie (Jeff) Moses, Mara Shasserre; one grandson, Robert (Stephanie) Shasserre; eight great-grandchildren, Dusty Bullock, Trever Bullock, Luke Bullock and Kaleb Shasserre, Emilia Shasserre, Alaina Shassarre, Lee Moses and Murian Moses; other relatives; and many friends.
Helen chose cremation as the final disposition. There will be a Private Family inurnment in the Steelville Cemetery at a later date.
