James “Jim” Anton Jones of Steelville, MO passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020 at home surrounded by his family at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 30 days. He was born February 9, 1942 in Granite City, Illinois to Elvet Elsworth Jones and Sara Mae Zumsteg Jones. As a young boy, he grew up around Cherryville graduating from Cherryville High School. One of his first jobs as a boy was when he became hired by Mr. Hoppe from St. Louis to help feed the swans and peacock in Steelville’s Hoppe Park. In later years, Jim became manager of the Fisherman’s Dude Ranch.
He was united in marriage to Leona Ogle in 1989. Jim was baptized in the Presbyterian Church and later attended church at the Steelville Assembly of God. He always enjoyed fishing, gardening, growing flowers and building items with wood. He believed in helping children who had medical issues and was a supporter of St. Jude Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elvet and Sara Mae Jones; two brothers, Gordon Jones and Robert Jones; two sisters, Elvette Jones and Loretta Cummings.
He is survived by his wife, Leona of Steelville; three sons, Tony Jones of St. Louis, MO, James R. (Sara) Jones of Cuba, MO and Nathan (Amanda Eckoff) Jones of Eureka, MO; four daughters, Tina (Tom) Hubacheck of Indiana, Jamie (Richard) Gilbert of Newburg, MO, and Kathy Lee (Jason Vanling) Jones and Wendy (Billy) Worsham all of Tennessee; one step-son, Lloyd Ogle of Texas; one brother, Terry (Cathy) Jones of Steelville, MO; one sister-in-law, Irma Jones of Steelville, MO; one brother-in-law, Robert Cummings of Steelville, MO; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Katie, Layla, Gabriel, Miriam and others; several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and friends.
The Family received friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, MO.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Special music of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and "Amazing Grace, My Chains are gone" was played. Memories were shared by son, Nathan Jones.
Committal prayer and interment were in the Steelville Cemetery.
Honored to be casket bearers were Guy Smith, Dave Beel, Tony Jones, Billy Worsham, Nathan Jones, Gabriel Sutton and Bobby Jones with Honorary bearers, John Apperson, Lee Young, and David Hall.
