Loretta Munton Obituary

Loretta Anna Munton, nee Morrison, of Cuba, Missouri passed away Friday, May 9, 2025 in St. Louis at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 16 days. She was born September 23, 1935 in Davisville, Missouri to Willis D. Morrison and Anna Chandler Morrison.

Loretta grew up in Davisville and attended the Cherryville School.

She was united in marriage to Edward L. Brakefield in 1953 and after his passing, married Osco L. Munton in 1988.

In her earlier years of marriage, Loretta lived on the farm and was very involved with her family, cooking and canning. In 1985, she worked as a cook and in management at the Viburnum Inn and later at the Hen House in Bourbon where she retired. She was well known for her delicious chicken and dumplings.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed crocheting and making quilts for her family along with selling some of her quilts. The last few years before she went into the nursing home, Loretta enjoyed volunteering at the Cuba Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Anna Chandler; her husbands, Edward L. Brakefield and Osco L. Munton; son, Ronnie Brakefield;  son-in-law, Bill Trask; brothers and sisters, Rainey (Minnie) Gregory, Troy (Emma) Gregory, ,Ralph (Ruby) Gregory, Mabel (Bob) Wieland, Leonard Morrison, Lenor (Erma) Morrison and Lonnie (Dormalee) Morrison.

She is survived by her eight grandchildren, Nicole (Michael) Lizenbee of Viburnum, MO, Sean (Melanie) Munton of Savannah, GA, Kristina (Eric) Phares of Farmington, MO, Nichole (Levi) Simshauser of St. James, MO and Megan (Shawn) Fisher of Richland, MO, Michelle (Mark) Paul, George Vinson and James Vinson; daughter, Sharon Trask of Potosi, MO, step-sons, Leonard (Vickie) Munton of Steelville, MO and Michael (Sue) Vinson of Olympia Village, MO; 10 great-grandchildren, Dylan (Reagan) Johnston, Braden Johnston, Oakley Munton, Owen Munton, Collin Ray, Caitlyn Ray, Natalie Ray, Xavier Simshauser, Meadow Paul and Meredith Paul; 1 great-great-grandchild, Hilary Johnston; other relatives; and friends.

The Family received friends from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, MO.

A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 P.M. on  Tuesday, May 13, 2025 with Rev. Terry Hogan and Sean Munton officiating. Special music of "Look for Me" and "People Need the Lord" was sung by Linda Morrison and other music of "Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone" was sung by Rev. Terry Hogan.

Committal prayer and interment were in the Shoal Creek Cemetery. 

Honored to be casket bearers were Mike Lizenbee, Dylan Johnston, Braden Johnston, Gary Gregory, Lonnie Gene Morrison and Randy Morrison with Matthew Morrison serving as honorary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Loretta’s name to the Shoal Creek Cemetery or Czar Cemetery.

The Munton Family was served by the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home, Steelville, MO.
