Philip Darrell Wood of Berryman, Missouri passed away Monday, March 14, 2022 at Potosi Manor at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was born May 2, 1941 at Berryman, Missouri to Walter and Mary Ann Mayberry Wood.
Philip pursued music studies and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Philip went on to serve in the Peace Corps, teaching English in Thailand. Philip then lived in California for many decades, working as a professional musician in rock and jazz settings throughout the state. An accomplished trumpet player, pianist, and musical arranger, Philip was also a prodigious composer of jazz and rock / popular tunes.
In his later years, he earned a master’s degree in music from San Francisco State University and devoted himself to working as a high school music teacher and band director. In this profession, he combined his extensive professional experience with a passion to nurture music study, inspiring many, many students along the way. Throughout his life he was a devoted friend, sharing musical encouragement and insight at every opportunity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Ann Wood.
Philip is survived by his brother, Gary (Anne) Wood of Manchester, MA; two nephews,
Daniel (Hannah) Wood and Geoffrey Wood; and one niece Caroline Wood.
His Family chose cremation as the final disposition.
There will be a Private Family inurnment at the Sam Crocker Cemetery.
