Shirley Faye Grayson, nee Dingley, of Steelville, Missouri, passed away at her home on January 27, 2021 at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 21 days. She was born March 6, 1934 in Bland, Missouri to Paul Obed Dingley and Minnie Melinda Jane Mitchell Dingley. She was united in marriage to Noel Glen Grayson and to this union four children were born.
Shirley and Glen enjoyed a marriage that lasted over 60 years. They loved traveling with friends and family. An Alaskan cruise and a Caribbean cruise were their favorite trips. Many camping trips at their place on the river gave them time with family.
Early in their marriage, Shirley was employed at Cuba Shoe for a number of years. She attended Cosmetology School in the evenings and in 1963 she opened Shirley’s Beauty Shop. For 55 years she styled hair and cared for “her ladies.” Caring for her ladies went beyond just perms and haircuts. She cooked meals, provided transportation, donated money and opened her home to those who needed a place to stay. She loved her clients as family. In 1995, Shirley joined her son Alan when he opened Hair and Body Care. She continued to work as a cosmetologist until her retirement in 2017.
Shirley was also active in her community and church. She chaperoned teen dances, helped Go-Getters 4-H Club, served the Martha and Mary Chapter of Easter Star, danced with Yadkin Creek Cloggers and was honored as Steelville Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. She worked behind the scenes in many weddings and beauty pageants to make sure everything was perfect. For 50 years, she served as nursery coordinator for Steelville First Baptist Church. She loved and comforted generations of babies while their parents attended services. A corner of the nursery is designated as “Nanny’s Corner” in her honor.
Shirley’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was the best mom and Nanny anyone could ever want or need. She loved her kids, grandkids and great-grand kids more than anything. They were her angels. Every birthday and holiday and most weekends were spent at Nan and Pop’s house just being together as a family. Christmas was her favorite holiday. On Christmas Eve the entire family gathered at her house for a huge dinner and a visit from Santa. Shirley loved being Santa’s helper passing out stockings and gifts. She loved her family. Every day was about her kids, her angels. She babysat kids, shopped with kids, vacationed with kids, played with kids and loved kids. Our Nanny will be greatly missed.
Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Glen Grayson; her parents, Paul and Minnie Dingley; and one sister, Joy Dingley.
