Elgie "Gene" Eugene Gowers of Steelville, Missouri passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 in St. Louis at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 19 days. He was born January 23, 1951 at Berryman, Missouri.
Gene served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was an artist of music and acting. In his earlier years, he was a musician in Nashville, playing country, blue grass and gospel. He wrote songs and loved to sing. In three different years, he acted in the "Mask" in St. Louis. He helped in the pit playing his guitar for his nephew's class in St. Louis for the play "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat." He also loved to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and work around the lake at his home.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William (Ida) Haffer, Elmer (Lula) Gowers; adoptive father, Ellis Gowers; brother, Gary Gowers; and infant sister, Janice Carol Gowers; and one great-great niece, Angel Gowers.
He is survived by his mother, Ruby Barman and husband Bill of St. Louis, MO; one brother, David Gowers and wife Cielo of Sacramento, CA; a special friend, Sheila Bradbury of Steelville, MO; nephews, Gary (Kyung Sook) Gowers and Billy (Cally) Gowers, their daughters, Lucy, Audrey and Maryn of Springfield, MO and Jason (Sara) Gowers, their children, Heidi, Aaron (Joel) and their children, Madilyn and Titin, Ethan, Ty and Tucker all of of Bourbon, MO; niece, Danyelle (Jason) Greife and their children, Macean, Taylor, Mayah, Tobie, and Zoey of Leslie, MO; five aunts, Ruth E. Thomas, Melba Doss, Fern McClain and husband Bob, Sadie McClain and Lucille Jennings; one uncle, Floyd (Bud) Haffer; other relatives and friends.
The Family received friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, MO.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, MO with Billy Gowers officiating. Special music of “Wings of a Dove”, “I Can Only Imagine”, “You Raise me Up” and “Go Rest High” was played. Other music of “Cardboard Box” was sung and played on piano by Valerie Thomas.
Interment was in the Ft. Leonard Wood State Veteran's Cemetery in Waynesville, MO.
Honored to be casket bearers were Billy Gowers, Jason Gowers, Roger Crocker, Jeremy Crocker, Eric Duran, and Clint Thomas.
