George William Scofield

George "Bill" Scofield, found peace on February 18, 2007. Born in Gorin, Missouri on October 29, 1922, to George Henry and Audra Mauller Scofield, he spent his school years in Quincy, Illinois, where he was known as "Bill" and lettered as the varsity quarterback. Bill put his college education on hold from 1942-45 when he proudly served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Arena. After WWII, he returned to the University of Missouri, where he met and married his lifelong partner, Bernice Ellen Gravatt, on November 29, 1946. Now known as "George", he put his life plans on hold once again to serve his country, this time as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, from 1951 to 1952. When his military tours of duty were over, he returned to his career in the sale of medical and physical therapy equipment. He ultimately settled his family in Houston, Texas, founding Houston X-Ray, Houston Medical Company, and George Scofield Company. In 1988, the Texas Physical Therapy Association dedicated their annual convention to his name and his 35 years of support. George developed a passionate interest in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the Scoutmaster of his sons' Troop and earning numerous awards, including several Scoutmasters' knots. George was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He especially loved El Rancho Cima and volunteered several of his summer vacations to serve as a Camp Commissioner. George never lost his love for football and was an ardent fan of his Alma Mater and of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans.

George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernice, and his legacy lives on in his children and their families: Randy, JoAnn, Katie, Becky and Jim Scofield of Sugar Land, Texas; Gary, Debbie, Gavin and Gage Scofield of Arvada, Colorado; and Jay, Sandy, Jvan and Cian McGuire of Plano, Texas.

George's funeral service was held at Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri, where he was laid to rest among family in Bernice's hometown on Saturday, February 24. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Area Council, 2225 North Loop West, Houston TX 77008, or to Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75225. We would like to thank all of the people of Silvarado Sugar Land for the loving, compassionate care they provide to George and his family.
